Generally, there are four basic steps to achieving and maintaining healthy-looking skin:1- Cleansing 2- Exfoliating 3- Toning 4- Moisturizing CLEANSING THE SKIN: Why? To remove the daily buildup of the everyday environment, as well as the constantly produced crop of dead skin cells and surface oils. Cleansing is critical to the facial skin care routine. You have a few basic types of products to accomplish this step including: Bar Soaps, Lotions, Creams, Cleansing Pads and Liquid Cleansers. Make sure you choose a facial product that doesn’t irritate your skin. FACIAL EXFOLIATING AND SCRUBS: Again you have choices. The main two choices are mechanical or passive exfoliation. Mechanical exfoliation removes accumulated dead skin cells, leaving you with a softer, smoother complexion. They are creams or lotions containing cleansing grains of fine, sand-like particles that have a mild abrasive action on the skin. Commonly called facial scrubs, these products are designed to loosen debris from the surface of the skin and stimulate circulation. Passive exfoliation uses can be accomplished with Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). AHAs are derived from citrus fruits or sugar cane. They exfoliate the skin by loosening the glue-like bonds that hold the dead cells of surface skin together. The key is to pick one method not both. Consistent facial exfoliation increases cell turnover, which prevents a buildup of extra dead skin cells that can clog pores. You can exfoliate as much as once per day, but two to three times a week should be sufficient. TONING: After you cleanse, make sure you use a formulated toner or astringent to remove fine traces of oil, dirt and make-up that you may have missed when cleansing. Toner is the final step to cleansing. It gently sweeps away pore-blocking impurities, restores pH and prepares your skin for moisturizer. Priming the skin with a toner enables the moisturizer to perform more effectively. With a cotton pad, wipe the toner in a downward motion across the forehead, cheeks and around the nose and chin. MOISTURIZING: This is necessary even for those who have oily skin. There are plenty of moisturizers on the market that are oil-free. Moisturizers preserve the elasticity and plumpness of the skin. Even oily skin can have low moisture levels. Moisturizing is increasingly important at night; As the body rests, the skin has an opportunity to undo the day's damage by hydrating and restoring cells. Continuously moisturizing the skin is important even when experiencing an acne breakout. In fact, some moisturizers contain acne-fighting ingredients that can help treat the skin and prevent future breakouts while hydrating and conditioning. It is a misconception that dry skin lacks oil. In fact, dry skin usually lacks water. But you do not want to overdose on a cream. A nickel-size drop of moisturizer should cover the face and neck. And remember to apply the cream when the skin is still damp from toner to increase absorption. To apply moisturizer, use the tips of the fingers and dot moisturizing cream lightly all over the face. Press the fingers of both hands and work the cream slowly upward in a circular motion starting from the neck. Pat the cream gently around the eyes. Work the cream around the jaw line, chin and mouth with the middle fingers of both hands. Massage the cream over the throat with alternating hands, using upward strokes from the collarbone to the chin.
